Gyroscope Level 4: Frog Games IV!

As a reminder, the goal of the Frog Games is to ensure Sybil resistance. Sybil resistance prevents a single person from creating multiple digital representations by, for example, using bots.Typically, crypto projects are particularly susceptible to Sybil attacks since they are by design permissionless and allow an anonymous set of users to participate. Unfortunately, no single mechanism has yet emerged as best in class. Instead, the best-practice to harden against Sybil attacks is to layer a number of different checks on top of each other. The protocol can be reasonably certain that a user who passes several of such checks (but not necessarily all) is a unique person.

As such, the next Challenge IV of the Frog Game has been launched. The next challenge, Challenge V will occur virtually on the 16th of December at 6PM GMT.

For general information on the Rules of the Frog Game see below.

Challenge IV

Challenge IV is accepting more POAPs from a wide range of community events. A total of 39,067 unique accounts are eligible. Note that POAPs are split into three different groups:

  • POAPs from virtual events (e.g. Decentraland event)

  • POAPs from community calls

  • POAPs from ‘high-involvement activities’ (e.g. small, in-person events, educational events and DAO working groups)

Since a user may own POAPs from a given group across many mainnet (Ethereum or xdai) addresses, we allow users to sign off on their testnet account using as many eligible mainnet addresses as they have, and the protocol will add up points. If you have many eligible mainnet addresses, it is in your interest to use them all to sign off on one testnet account as you will gain more Sybil points and be more sure of passing the final Frog Games tally.

A snapshot was taken on 12 December of POAP holders from eligible events. To be eligible for this challenge, you need to have held an eligible POAP as of that date.

POAPs are evidence that a certain community event has been attended, oftentimes without the expectation of any reward. However, the type of event greatly influences how easy or difficult it is for an individual to obtain multiple POAPs from the same event. Obtaining a POAP from a virtual event, for example, is much easier — and thus more likely to be gamed — than a POAP from a small in-person event or a DAO working group.

To account for these differences, yet still allow many people to participate in Challenge IV, three different groups of POAPs have been created. A total of 39,067 unique addresses are eligible. Since some POAPs (e.g. virtual events) are less Sybil-secure, points received from that group may have less weight in the end compared to the other checks. However, if an account is able to pair Sybil points from a POAP group and a later challenge or two, the community can be reasonably sure that the owner is a unique person.

The full list of qualifying POAPs is stated here, with the list of qualifying addresses being available here.

Challenge V

Importantly, the next challenge is going to be more active and will thus allow users to get verified not based on their past activity, but through other means. Generally, this can be thought of as the beginning of a series of ‘Proof of Work’ challenges, that complement the current series of ‘Proof of Past Work’ challenges.

To participate in Challenge V, you will need to be present in the Discord at precisely 6PM GMT on the 16th of December. See you there!

Instructions for Challenge IV

If you are think you may be eligible, track your progress in the Testnet UI, connect your wallet at MyCrypto.com (avoid Coinbase Wallet, which seems to be buggy) and:

  1. Paste the Kovan address you used in the testnet in the message field

  2. Use the address that owns eligible POAPs to sign the message and authenticate your ownership

3. Copy the signed message and paste it in the respective field of the game UI

Reminder: the rules of the Frog Game

Level 4 will pose a series of challenges that can be solved by humans but are difficult for bots. With every successfully passed challenge it is thus a bit more certain that the respective address is controlled by a single human and not a bot.

For each challenge passed, players will gain ‘sybil points’. At the end of the game, each player needs enough Sybil points to pass. There is no way to tell in advance how many challenges you must complete or how many points are awarded per challenge. The challenges are not structured by difficulty or the amount of granted Sybil points.

Importantly, different challenges may grant different amounts of Sybil points. Players may decide to not participate in a given challenge, but should be wary of the fact that the safest way to passing Level 4 is to pass as many challenges as possible. To repeat: there is no need to pass every challenge.

Multiple other challenges will be launched over the next coming weeks. This will give players sufficient opportunity to participate and make trade-offs between gaining as many Sybil points as possible and their wish to not disclose certain information. So there is no need to pass every single challenge.
