Gyroscope Level 4: Frog Games III!

As a reminder, the goal of the Frog Games is to ensure Sybil resistance. Sybil resistance prevents a single person from creating multiple digital representations by, for example, using bots.

Typically, crypto projects are particularly susceptible to Sybil attacks since they are by design permissionless and allow an anonymous set of users to participate. Unfortunately, no single mechanism has yet emerged as best in class. Instead, the best-practice to harden against Sybil attacks is to layer a number of different checks on top of each other. The protocol can be reasonably certain that a user who passes several of such checks (but not necessarily all) is a unique person.

As such, the next Challenge III of the Frog Game has been launched. Even more challenges will follow before the end of this week. For general information on the Rules of the Frog Game see below.

Challenge III

Challenge III is for active governance participants on Snapshot. For each eligible account you own, you can sign off on your Gyro testnet account, and the protocol will add up points. 13 764 accounts are eligible. The criteria to be eligible for this check are the following:

  • Vote on at least 3 Snapshot proposals of included crypto projects (see list below)

  • Be active for a minimum period of 30 days (i.e. difference between earliest and latest vote >30d)

  • Pass the above two criteria before the 1st December of 2021

People who repeatedly participate in governance are helpful community members who have put in some level of work without a strong incentive to game a participation metric. However, a single person often has many different voting accounts. To account for this, we allow users to sign off on their testnet account using as many eligible addresses as they have. If you have many eligible addresses, it is in your interest to use them all to sign off on one testnet account as you will gain more Sybil points and be more sure of passing the final Frog Games tally.

The crypto projects with the largest member count on Snapshot were included. The list of eligible addresses is available here, with the full list of qualifying snapshot spaces being stated below:

Uniswap, ens.eth, sushigov.eth, gitcoindao.eth, aave.eth, poh.eth, snapshot.dcl.eth, xdaistake.eth, balancer.eth, dydxgov.eth, curve.eth, badgerdao.eth, loot-dao.eth, graphprotocol.eth, 1inch.eth, mutantsdao.eth, paraswap-dao.eth, cvx.eth, rarible.eth, bitdao.eth, cake.eth, ybaby.eth, klimadao.eth, fei.eth, lido-snapshot.eth, theheaddao.eth, shapeshiftdao.eth, piedao.eth, dodobird.eth, bancornetwork.eth, friendswithbenefits.eth, instadapp-gov.eth, yam.eth, gnosis.eth, alchemistcoin.eth, abracadabrabymerlinthemagician.eth

Instructions for the challenges

If you are think you may be eligible, track your progress in the Testnet UI, connect your wallet at MyCrypto.com (avoid Coinbase Wallet, which seems to be buggy) and:

  1. Paste the Kovan address you used in the testnet in the message field

  2. Use the address that voted on Snapshot proposals to sign the message and authenticate your ownership

3. Copy the signed message and paste it in the respective field of the game UI

Reminder: the rules of the Frog Game

Level 4 will pose a series of challenges that can be solved by humans but are difficult for bots. With every successfully passed challenge it is thus a bit more certain that the respective address is controlled by a single human and not a bot.

For each challenge passed, players will gain ‘sybil points’. At the end of the game, each player needs enough Sybil points to pass. There is no way to tell in advance how many challenges you must complete or how many points are awarded per challenge. The challenges are not structured by difficulty or the amount of granted Sybil points.

Importantly, different challenges may grant different amounts of Sybil points. Players may decide to not participate in a given challenge, but should be wary of the fact that the safest way to passing Level 4 is to pass as many challenges as possible. To repeat: there is no need to pass every challenge.

Multiple other challenges will be launched over the next coming weeks. This will give players sufficient opportunity to participate and make trade-offs between gaining as many Sybil points as possible and their wish to not disclose certain information. So there is no need to pass every single challenge.
